  1. 1.Make a List Before you even start packing gear you should make a list. The list should cover paddling, camping, and survival gear. Make sure everything you pack is on the list. Remember to bring the list with you so that you can check to make sure you don't leave anything behind . Planning a trip can be a complex task for a new paddler. If your are unsure of what to bring you can check out my camping list. The more trips you go on the better and smaller your list will become. 2.Check Your Gear Check all of your gear to make sure it is working correctly. You don't want to paddle miles to your camp site only to learn your stove isn't working. You should also make sure you know how to use everything you have. Practice using water filters, pumps, and survival gear so you can make sure you understand how it works. 3.Check it Twice It is always a good idea to check the important gear twice. For example, make sure you have matches, top off fuel bottles, have water treatment pills, and other essentials. 4.Share Gear Plan out what everyone in the group will take and where it will be packed in their boat. There are certain pieces of gear not everyone needs. For instance, there is no reason everyone should carry a stove or cooking gear.
