I used to have a garmin, but it didn't even work in the canyons by my house in LA. So, what works for you guys? Theoretically they're supposed to work all around the world, but that doesn't mean that there is data in every country. Anything work for China?
They all work. It's just a matter of what kind of dataset is available to you. The GPS will give you the lat/long, but you need the reference points (maps) behind it.
The Garmin you're talking about probably doesn't have maps for China. As for acquiring a signal, it all depends on the type of antenna (receiver) you have. Most consumer devices have 2-5m accuracy and not a very strong antenna. Thus, slower acquisition time.
If you check with USGS, you can get alot of free datasets, especially for the US. As for other countries, you'll have to keep looking.
